note from member about rust protection

After you kick the rust off paint it with this stuff called "Hammercote" it
works great even if all the rust is not completely gone. It's dynamite. No
primer either just brush on and forget it!! no rust! I use it all the time in
my auto restorations it lasts for years. It can be bought at house or auto
paint stores. Good luck---Kathy(Ma)

Note from eric to amanda concerning undercoating

hi amanda,

I think if you want something good to coat the bottom of the
plywood box under your scotty, I might recommend doing what we
used forever to undercoat old VW's.  It is simply Fibered Roofing
Cement. it is made for roofs, and sticks great to wood, metal, your
hands, shirt, hair, etc.  It can be brushed on, or put on with a putty
knife.  The type that has fiber in it is thicker than the non fibered
stuff, and will fill small holes, and seams too.  it is very inexpensive,
maybe 6 dollars for a gallon can.  It is black, and will eventually
harden so it will not stay sticky.

hope this may help

STRIPPING PAINT FROM CABNETS
SUGGESTED BY  MSBEKY

Awhile back I posted a question about the cabinets and painting them. I
haven't got that far yet as I have been busy but I did find an easy way to
get the paint off fairly easy without ruining them yesterday!

I had tried a heat gun and they scortch easy plus it's very time consuming
with the scraping. I tried a gel paint remover and scraping.. another time
consuming and a bit more expensive idea.

By accident I found that Easy Off Oven cleaner.. the heavy duty works in 5
minutes kind in a yellow can works awesome! Spray it on and take just a
regular garden hose with a jet feature on the nozzle and it peels off fairly
fast. I let it set for about 15 minutes as it's a different application then the
stove of course. With 1 can at less then $5 I did 8 doors and a drawer.
Some I did 2x as the layers were pretty thick.

I will probably need to do some of them 1 more time but for less then $10
I will have cut my prep time way down compared to the time I was looking
at. It took it down to the blue speckle without hurting that finish at all. I
will have some sanding to do but it will now be very minimal.

I dried the doors of water as soon as I was done rinsing and spread them
out to dry good so they would not warp. Be sure to work in a well
ventilated area always or outside if possible if anyone else tries this. Lowes
carries a spray paint remover but it's more expensive and I am all about
saving time and MONEY!

Happy Camping everyone :)
